Questions about affordable vet care

Can I get free vet treatment in Manchester?

Possibly, if you receive certain means-tested benefits and live in the catchment area of a PDSA Pet Hospital. PDSA uses your postcode and the benefits you receive to decide whether you qualify, and its online eligibility checker gives you an answer in a couple of minutes. There is no free walk-in vet for everyone.

What is the PDSA Pet Care scheme?

If you live outside a PDSA Pet Hospital catchment but in the catchment of a participating private practice, PDSA Pet Care costs £4.50 a month and includes one vet health consultation and one vaccination or booster a year, plus 20% off full-price treatment. To qualify you must receive Housing Benefit, means-tested support with Council Tax, or Universal Credit with the Housing Element. Out-of-hours care is excluded.

What if I don’t qualify for charity care?

Ask your practice about payment plans or spreading the cost; some practices offer finance or a monthly health plan that covers routine care such as vaccinations and flea and worm treatment. Not-for-profit practices also exist that are open to everyone; they are marked as charity or not-for-profit in this directory. Pet insurance taken out while your pet is healthy is the main way to cover large unexpected bills.

Eligibility rules are set by each charity and change from time to time. Check with the charity before relying on this summary.
